He fenced with all three weapons. He competed in dressage at the 1964 Olympics, helping Sweden to fifth place in the team competition. As an United States Equestrian Team coach, Ljungquist guided the US dressage team to a bronze medal at the 1976 Olympics and a gold medal at the 1975 Pan American Games.
